The West Bancorporation Foundation, Inc. has approved a $5,000 grant to help fund construction of a new handicap accessible entrance on the east side of the Basilica of St John. An elevator will be installed as well as a new staircase on the outside of the elevator. Basilica of St John has set a goal of $800,000 for the elevator fund, they are currently at $444,326.38.
On August 18, 2016, West Bank Market Manager, Jasmina Alicic, presented the check to Steve Tatz, Parish Business Manager and Reverend Aquinas M. Nichols, Pastor of the Episcopal Basilica of St. John in downtown Des Moines.
The Basilica of St John is a hidden treasure of the city. On the National Historic Registry, St John has been serving residents of Des Moines for almost a 100 years. The church is patterned in the style of the Northern Italian, or Lombardy Romanesque, and resembles St. Paul’s Basilica outside the Walls of Rome.
